It was on the 1st of April that MALACATE inaugurated the installation "Nest", by the Norwegian artist and project partner, Lise Wulff, who was in artistic residency at Mina de São Domingos since the 20th of March to, together with the community, build this art installation.
During her first visit to Mina, at the end of last year, Lise was fascinated by the fact that there are so many birds nesting in this area, in particular the white-rumped swift, which is known to nest precisely in the desertified territory of the old mines: "It made me think about the fact that birds can fly anywhere, but they choose to fly exactly to the Mina area".
Based on this idea, Lise decided to build a wooden structure three meters wide and two meters high, inspired by the shapes of a nests, being inspired by the special colors of the former mining area: dark purple, ocher and turquoise.
In total, more than 400 meters of wood, 20 liters of paint, more than a thousand screws and many saws were used, in addition to the help of different people from the community of Mina de São Domingos who were essential for the execution of the project and to the welcome Lise during her stay.
The inauguration took place in the late afternoon, and was presented by the artist Lise Wulff, in the company of the artistic directors of the Malacate Project Filipe Abreu and Miguel Maia, and Rosinda Pimenta, Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Mértola, Malacate's partner.
Finally, and before a gathering to celebrate this new art installation, we also had a presentation by the Grupo Coral da Mina de São Domingos, at the request of Lise, who was delighted after meeting them for the first time on her visit last year.
